During the last 20 years, I’ve been working in several companies and roles.
As a graduated Graphic Designer with an internship in a small web design studio called GrupoWeb in Chile – where I was born – and where only 1 year later I became Art Director given my effort and my limitless curiosity to learn and learn everyday more, each job position allowed me to meet different people and learn from each of them.
As an practitioner, I learned to design websites when no CSS exists yet. Just plain HTML, a lot of and wonderful animated gifs to give the sense of interaction, and 3D effects. A lot of Photoshop, fighting with mac Performa “Performance”, some broken Mac G3, and off course uploading everything with our fabulous 14k Modem…
Put the USERS in your life
One of the most remarkable works in those times was the first online community (A.K.A. Chat ) in Chile to our Client ENTEL (one of the biggest telecom companies) called “La Muralla”. In which one, in addition to being on the solution provider side, I was part of it, meeting them from time to time in endless parties.
“La Muralla ( The wall ), it was a “simply” Perl page as part of “La Tribu”, a web portal with a lot of typical amenities at that time, with a personal message “Déjenme ser” ( let me be ), and with a “refresh” button (Ajax wasn’t born yet): a place to share whatever you want, always following the Netiquette rules 🙂
Now, looking back, I understand that I was empathizing with our users in a natural way, I was observing them. And every glass of wine, was the perfect excuse to be closer to them, to understand their needs, desires, and concerns. Off course, I enjoyed every glass! At that time UX nor did it exist yet, although Nielsen was there,and the USERS were there, they were always there.
